It's pretty rare that someone from the band talks to me while I am photographing them on stage. That's why I remember very clearly when David Lee Roth turned and looked at me and said "Is that your telephoto lens, or are you just happy to see me?" It turns out, both answers were correct.

This photo has been selected by Smithsonian Books to appear in “Smithsonian Rock and Roll: Live and Unseen Hardcover”. The book will be available October 24, 2017.
About Chris Deutsch
In the mid-1980s, Chris Deutsch published Front Row magazine in Denver, and did photography for a variety of other publications. For many years, he photographed almost every major show that came through Denver. His portfolio includes many great bands and performers at the peak of their careers: Van Halen, Kiss, Bon Jovi, U2, Iron Maiden & Elton John. Chris also photographed other performers like Motley Crue, Scorpions, Whitney Houston and Cyndi Lauper when they were just getting started. Sometimes there were surprises, such as when a relatively unknown band named Metallica opened for Ozzy Osbourne.
